Barfi! is pure cinematic delight. Written and directed by Anurag Basu, the film stars Bollywood heavyweights Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and southern superstar Ileana D’Cruz. The film engrosses us in the world of deaf-mute Barfi whose trail to find a soul mate who shares the same love for life that he does, brings a scrapbook of many heartfelt moments on the big screen.

After astounding audiences and critics alike in Rockstar to assure that he truly is the best of his generation, Ranbir Kapoor mesmerises in his role as the quirky yet charming Barfi. Ranbir really plays the evidently demanding role beyond any expectations to the extent that one would suspect Hollywood would be calling soon. The multitalented Priyanka Chopra has already proven her versatility as an actress with her past acclaimed performances in and her performance in Barfi! is no doubt worthy of an accolade or two. Her role as Jhilmili; the autistic and misunderstood girl only shows how accomplished the actress really is. Furthermore her chemistry with Ranbir is enchanting to watch as is the development of their relationship. Ileana D’cruz gives a great Bollywood debut as the soon to be married Shruti. The stunning actress shines as the traditional daughter who gets swept of her feet by the charm of Barfi, and goes on to battle with what her family believes is right and what her heart yearns for.
The music which is a central focus of the film is composed by renowned maestro Pritam. Not only does it enhance the magic of the scenes, but it also captures the emotions of the moments on screen to engage the audience’s senses further. This includes the light hearted Ala Barfi! and the sweet Main Kya Karoon. The cinematography is a visual treat, with copious amounts of scenic views of Darjeeling and the hustle and bustle of Kolkata, as well as imaginatively creative moments. This includes the scene when we as the audience see a colourful dance through the eyes of Jhilmil.
Love is the key element in the film. Whether it’s Barfi love for life or his innocent relationships with Shruti and Jhilmil, Basu has definitely created a masterpiece in story making. One aspect of love which is touched upon throughout the film is the unconditional love that grandparents give their grandchildren.
