Interview with The Grewals - Arvinder
Channel 4 is taking TV's most intimate look yet at British Asian life with a fly-on-the-wall series about three generations of a Sikh family. The Grewal family have been filmed over eight weeks, with 28 cameras following their every move. The show is to break new ground, looking at the inner workings of an Asian family.
In the show, Arvinder and Sarbjit, married for more than 30 years, live in a five-bedroom pebble-dashed house and communicate mostly through insults and abuse: he demands a cup of tea; she grunts contemptuously. He wistfully remembers when she was slim; she says she can recall when he still had hair. In the rare moments when they are not bickering, Arvinder works as a coach driver and Sarbjit is the matriarch who holds the family together.
